"Innocence Taken" by Kiara Davar
Innocence taken
by those who thought
that it was ok to lie
by those who thought
nothing matters
Innocence taken
no longer available
Innocence unable
to ever speak again
Innocence silenced
to soon
Innocence taken
there's no truth over the lie
Innocence taken
by those who thought
I'll be the same again
by those who thought
its ok to kill
by those who thought
it's ok to take
Innocence replaced
by fear and mistrust
Innocence disappeared
before it came
Innocence taken
by those who
laughed at every cry
by those who had none
Innocence reflecting
a little girls eyes
innocence taken away
without my permission
Analysis:
The poem begins by displaying the ways that innocence can be removed from people. The man lied to his son to give him hope and comfort in the horrid situation which he thought would benefit the boy but it only gave the boy a deluded sense of the desolate situation he was in. When the boy was finally exposed to murder, starvation, and cannibalism it quickly resulted in his loss of innocence and it forced him to grow up more rapidly than if his father would have been honest and prepared him for the harsh reality of the evil within their new world. Through the continuous development of the boy's innocence being diminished, he begins to talk less and less to the point that the man is unsure if his son will ever speak again. In the novel, the boy faces several different kinds of evils displayed by the men that murder, steal, and lie which lead to his innocence being lost because the evils are prevalent in their daily lives. The line "the innocence disappeared before it came" relates to how the boy loses his innocence before he has the chance to live a typical childhood. "Innocence taken those who had none", such as the cannibals, murderers, and thieves. The innocence of the boy is taken against the father's will, something that couldn't be avoided nor helped.
