Terrified Innocence
Read me a story.
Can I hold your hand?
The boy froze.
Terrified.
Crying.
What is it?
Nothing.
What you put in your head is there forever.
Shivering, starving, begging.
Killers, thieves.
He didn't know if he'd ever speak again.
Speak again, what was there to hide?
He didn't look back anymore.
He didn't wave back anymore.
He didn't do that anymore.
The boy knew what he knew.
Who would find the little boy?
Stories are supposed to be happy.
Supposed to be happy.
But there were no stories to tell.

Research and Discoveries: We chose to research loss of innocence within The Road because it was an interesting reoccurring motif. We were drawn to this topic because we sympathized with the young boy facing all of the evils that eventually stole his innocence too soon. We chose a painting, poem, song and essay because it helped to shape our research the best and it successfully captured the little boys loss of innocence.
