"Innocence" by Hootie and The Blowfish
"What else can I do when the tears have all been wasted?
And the only voice you choose to hear
Sings the songs of our hearts breaking.
Say your dreams, they all have changed.
Well, my smiles, they all have faded.
And the thoughts that used to seem so pure in my heart,
They now feel jaded.
Because I wanna feel like I did.
And I wanna feel innocence.''
Analysis: -The first line of the song is depicting how crying will not change the situation you're in. Similarly in The Road , after the boy loses his innocence he tells his father that if he isn't allowed to cry then he isn't allowed to cry either. This represents how the boy understand that crying will not change the desolate situation they have been put into within the new dark world. This also shows how the boy has matured during his loss of innocence as well.
-The second and third line correspond to how the boy chooses to listen to his father because he needs someone to reiterate the heart breaking hopelessness that he is trying to comprehend and that eventually leads to his loss of innoncence.
-The fourth line refers to how the boy's loss of innocence leads to him changing his dreams and hopes of finding salvation. It also represents how the boy's dreams have changed from happy to nightmares due to all the horror that occurs around him daily.
-The fifth, sixth and seventh line represent how after the boy lost his innocence he stopped smiling and was forced to become serious and mature. His pure heart and his childlike nature also disappeared with his loss of innocence.
-The eighth and ninth depict how the boy wants to feel that sense of innocence again but the harsh and destructive environment that he now lives in restricts him from his innocence and forces him to accept the loss of his innocence.
